On Track to Greatness
Growing up in the Netherlands, Ibrahim Afellay did what most boys did: he went to school, played football when classes let out, lost track of time, and got home late for dinner. The difference between him and those other boys? That extra time spent practicing launched a bright, young legacy that just won’t quit. Afellay officially began his career on PSV Eindhoven where he played for 7 years. With this team, he won 4 successive Dutch Championships (Euredivisie) in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008; the KNVB Cup in 2005, and the Johan Cruijff Schaal in 2008. He was also honored as captain during the 2010 season. In December 2010, he joined FC Barcelona where he participated in the winning of the Liga, the Champions League, the UEFA Super Cup, and the Spanish Super Cup in 2011. Since 2007, he has also played 36 matches for the Netherlands’ National Team, and although injured was part of the team’s 2012 Euro Cup roster. Afellay balances his busy football schedule with holidays in Morocco, where he visits family and friends.
