Despite staunch opposition from 7 out of the 18 county teams, the proposal for a 20 – over format was approved. The ECB did however give the counties the liberty to attract crowds however they wished to – whether it was through Music or even cheaper tickets – as long as there were no cheerleaders!

In only his first innings against an Australian attack spearheaded by Glen McGrath and Brett Lee, Yuvraj – yet to turn 19, took his cue from Sachin Tendulkar and scored a blistering 84 off 80 balls to ensure the Indians posted an imposing total. India went on to win that match with Yuvraj orchestrating Michael Bevan’s run-out as well as catching Ian Harvey off Venkatesh Prasad’s bowling.

There were the Aussies who held the top spot for over 13 years, followed by the Windies who held it for over 8 years, South Africa for over 5 years and England nearly 3!
