Giorgio Chiellini
All Business on the Pitch
You can’t play good defensive football without smarts, and Giorgio Chiellini has spent plenty of time training his brain as much as his instincts. He grew up playing football and basketball (he remains an avid fan of the sport) and went on to study business at the University of Turin. As his football career began to take off, Chiellini didn’t choose one over the other. Instead, he took his study books with him to away games. Well-known as one of the best center backs in Serie A and all of Europe, he kicked off his professional play at Livorno in 2000 where he played 55 matches. In 2004 he signed for Juventus Turin but he was loaned one year to Fiorentina where he appeared 37 times in only one year. In 2005 he re-joined Juventus Turin and put his strongest skills to use: neutralizing opponents, playing with unrivalled consistency, and maintaining the love of his fans throughout Italy. (A self-proclaimed “tech freak,” Chiellini has his own app and website with which he regularly connects with his fans.) He was named the Serie A Defender of the Year in 2008, 2009, and 2010. Chiellini is also an important member of the Italian National Team with 36 appearances and two goals.
