Coming into the game the pressure was on Bayern Munich to keep pace at the top of the table. They had entered the business end of the season and needed their big players deliver. But who would be brave enough? Who would stand up and be counted? Who would provide the quality and show they’re more than just a reputation?
We had our answer in six minutes. That’s how long it took for Mario Gomez to settle Bayern’s nerves and lay the groundwork for a comfortable victory with a vital early goal.
The breakthrough came about through Franck Ribéry’s wing trickery. The French international made room to deliver a cross then with quickness of thought and some lightening strides in his v1.11 Speed boots Gomez stole a march to the near post and glanced in a header. From the time Gomez broke the deadlock Bayern never looked back.
We shouldn’t be surprised. Super Mario’s opener was his 26th in 27 games this season, if you go back further that’s 66 in 63 games. For a striker playing in one of the top leagues in Europe to have that scoring record over so many games is frankly incredible. Put simply, having the German sharp shooter in your side is almost like having a goal headstart.
Twenty-five minutes later Thomas Muller’s header put Bayern two nil up and too far ahead of Kaiserslautern. With the game won in the first half the visitors were left looking at damage limitation. The way the second half went Lautern were lucky to escape without conceding more.
Come the final whistle Kaiserslautern were glad they don’t have to face Gomez again this season. He scored a hat trick against them earlier in the season and his goal today took him to eight in four appearances against Germany’s Red Devils.
In the end it was three, relatively easy, but hugely valuable points for Bayern. With only six points separating first from fourth in the league, they will need to count on Gomez’s contribution plenty more times if they are to reclaim their title. Fortunately for Bayern, there are few strikers more reliable than Mario Gomez.
