Chile took on near neighbours Peru and came away with a fantastic 1-0 victory to qualify as winners of Group C. The match was a close fought encounter that Chile should have had sewn up before both sides were reduced to 10 men after an altercation between Jean Beausejour and Giancarlo Carmona.
The Chileans who will be looking to add to their four Copa America final appearances have played some outstanding football at times in the tournament and deservedly beat Peru, although the deciding goal involved a large slice of luck. With the match seemingly heading for a stalemate, Peruvian defender Andre Carrillo deflected into his own net in injury time to send the Chilean fans wild.
Copa America heavyweights Uruguay also recorded a 1-0 victory over a youthful Mexico side to land an exciting clash with Argentina. The Uruguayans were gifted an early lead after the opposing keeper made an error after just 15 minutes, which would prove costly.
Star Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan continued to run the show, having created the opening goal, but the Uruguayans could not find the elusive second goal to kill the game off. Uruguay have shown glimpses of their ability so far, but there’s a feeling they can turn their performances up a notch or two.
Uruguay coach Oscar Tabarez is looking forward to the match against Argentina.
"But it will be a very tough hurdle for us. It will be do or die and now the tournament is really beginning in earnest.”
