Copa America Preview

With many of the world’s top leagues having finished their season, we thought now would be a great time to take a look at the game’s oldest international tournament, Copa America. After all, there’s no better way to fill the football-shaped hole in your life than by swatting up on a bit of Latin American football.

Ever since the first Copa America fixture way back in 1916 the cream of Latin American talent have used the tournament to renew old rivalries and create new ones in what are often fiery and passionate encounters. This year’s tournament promises to be no different and kicks off in just over two weeks time with 12 teams from across the continent descending on Argentina in what is tipped to be the closest tournament in years.

Although, the squads have yet to be announced, historically Copa America has proven to be a great tournament for young players to showcase their talent in front of a global audience and earn a lucrative move elsewhere. We can’t wait to see who has a career-defining match.

PUMA Football will of course be well represented with Chile and Uruguay looking to make their mark on the tournament. However, both sides have contrasting histories in Copa America with Uruguay topping the winners board (alongside Argentina) with 14 wins, whilst Chile have yet to win the trophy, having been losing finalists on four occasions. With history on the side of the Uruguayans, we’re backing them to make a real impact and produce the goods, but we certainly wouldn’t bet against Chile returning to Santiago with a trophy. Both sides go head to head on 8 July and we’re expecting fireworks in this Group C clash.

The distinct Latin American style of play and the emphasis on possession, technique and skill makes Copa America one of the highlights of the football calendar. Although we are unsure who the winner will be, one thing is certain: there will be goals, excitement and action – and lots of it. We’re expecting an absolute cracker of a tournament.

Who’s your tip for this year’s Copa America?
