In a snow covered Etihad stadium Sergio Aguero ran the show as Manchester City maintained their 100% home record in the league. Involved in all three goals the little Argentine in the blue v1.11s proved the difference as City ran out comfortable winners in uncomfortable conditions.
The Citizens went into the game with a question mark over them. Since Yaya Touré left for the African Cup of Nations City they’d been eliminated from both cups and entered last night’s game off the back of a defeat. Could they recapture the form they showed at the start of the season?
The question was answered in the first ten minutes when with typical twinkle toes Sergio started the move that led to a Man City penalty. When the ref pointed to the spot Aguero took the responsibility, placed the ball down then with one swing of his v1.11 boot put City in the lead.
Twenty minutes later Aguero turned provider, although it’s difficult to see how. Standing at the near post with his back to goal, the ball was fired into him waist high at great speed. From what looked like an impossible position he showed unbelievable dexterity to jump, pirouette and lift his leg in one movement. Then, somehow, he had the subtleness of touch to divert the ball across goal to an unmarked Adam Johnson who smashed it in off the hapless Chris Baird.
With most of the hard work done in the first half City seemed to take their foot off the gas knowing they had the game won. For a while it looked like the most exciting incident of the second half would be the sight of the grounds keepers scurrying on to clear snow off the pitch. Then with 20 minutes to go came the moment of the match. Aguero picked it up 25 yards out, ghosted past Philippe Senderos into the box and just as everyone in the stadium thought he would shoot dropped his shoulder and squared it to an unmarked Dzeko to wrap up the scoring.
Game over. Manchester City pulled away at the top of the table doing their goal difference no harm in the process.
There is a positive Fulham can take from last night’s game. At least they don’t have to face Sergio Aguero again this season.
