Whilst at the Dutch giants, he went on to make over 100 appearances, becoming a pivotal part of the team that won the 2001/02 and 2003/04 Eredivisie, as well as twice winning the KNVB cup.
As Piennar’s reputation continued to rise, clubs throughout Europe began to take notice of his talent and Pienaar was eventually signed by Borussia Dortmund in 2006. The following year he went on to make 27 appearances before moving on Loan to Everton the following summer.
In his spell with the Toffees, Piennar quickly became a fan favourite with his skill, range of passing and work-rate. Everton paid £2 million for his services and Piennar went on to have a fantastic season that saw him win the club’s player of the season award.
January 2011 saw Steven Piennar link up with Spurs in a bargain £3 million move and has since played 11 games, but is yet to register his first goal. Over the years Piennar has proved to be a key player for Bafana Bafana, participating in the 2002 and 2010 World Cup Finals, including captaining the team in the last world cup.
