Senior Gunnar Nixon of Edmond Santa Fe Track in Oklahoma smashed the previous record with 8,035 points in the decathlon at the Great Southwest Classic. Senior Lukas Verzbicas of Sandburg High School in Orland Park, Illinois, who has already signed a national letter of intent to the University of Oregon, ran 8:29.46 in the 2-mile at the 2011 Prefontaine Classic, also earning him an American High School record in the 3200m. American Bernard Lagat was also in the race, finishing first ahead of a strong international field in a time of 8:13.62. And, Amy Weissenbach, a junior at Harvard-Westlake High School in North Hollywood, California ran a speedy 2:02.04 for the 800m.
A record was also broken in the women's 2000m steeplechase as Mary Kate Anselmini from Ward Melville High School in East Setauket, New York came through the tape with a clock reading of 6:33.01.
Not all records were set on the track this weekend. Andrew Irwin from Mount Ida, Arkansas vaulted 17ft and 7in (5.39m) in a June indoor meet (don’t ask – we have no idea why there was an indoor meet at the start of Summer).
Congrats to these future stars of American track & field - we’re dying to see what they do next!!
