With two goals from Forlán and one from Suarez, La Celeste Olímpica triumphed in a game that saw flashes of brilliance, unyielding tenacity and ferocious spirit.
Luis Suarez, who impressed so much during Uruguay’s run at the South Africa World Cup, scored after 11 minutes to put his side into an early lead after dominating much of the opening period.
The middle of the first half saw both teams involved in some feisty football, with a couple of bookings apiece picked up for some tough challenges from both sides.
Diego Forlán scored three minutes before half-time after some sloppy defending, to give Uruguay a well deserved 2 goal cushion going into the break.
Early exchanges in the second half saw Paraguay hit the woodwork, whilst Uruguay continued to push to get a goal that would seal their victory.
The second half played out at a more relaxed pace with Uruguay defending with plenty of spirit and using counter attacks to relieve the pressure on their back four.
Then, late in the game, Forlán struck to grab his second goal of the game and the third of the game to complete a resounding win.
The culmination of the match saw Uruguay lift the famous Copa America trophy skywards to mark a climactic ending to the 2011 tournament.
PUMA would like to congratulate Uruguay on a famous triumph that has made history. Their 15th victory in the final of the Copa America makes Uruguay the most successful team to ever compete in the tournament, surpassing Argentina’s 14 victories.
