Although the drivers made it through the snow, the weather ultimately won the day, with the famous home of Scuderia Ferrari almost inaccessible, the launch was called off for visiting media and the radical-looking F2012 was ‘virtually’ launched via the internet.
The car is definitely striking in its appearance, although we know that many of the visible aerodynamic characteristics will change significantly during the scheduled winter tests and the car unveiled today will bear little relation to the version of the F2012 that takes to the start line in Melbourne in early March.
Ferrari’s designers are clear that virtually every aspect of the car has been newly designed, with almost no carry-over from its 2011 season forbearer, significant when you consider that the bill of materials for the new race car numbers over 6,000 components. As much as emphasising the aerodynamic focus for the engineers, Ferrari have clearly invested plenty of energy in the control electronics for the engine, in order to minimise so-called ‘drop-off’ in performance over the average three race lifecycle of each engine.
If the weather allows, the F2012 will take to the track in Jerez de La Frontera on Tuesday next week.
