MotoGP heads into a busy spell of action as the Assen TT kicks off three weekends of back-to-back racing.

Rounds 7, 8 and 9 follow in quick succession and by the conclusion of Italian GP at Mugello the shape of the championship will have taken a much firmer definition.

That said, Jorge Lorenzo is already 25 points ahead of reigning World Champion Casey Stoner in the standings thanks to four wins from the opening six races. Will the Honda rider be able to reel his Yamaha rival back in at an Assen track he last won at back in 2008 on the Ducati?

Switching focus to the Desmosedici Valentino Rossi and Nicky Hayden placed fourth and fifth at the circuit last season and will both be aiming to close that gap to the leading group. Hayden was 15 seconds off race winner Lorenzo at the last round at Silverstone, can he shave a bit more off and edge closer to a first podium of the season at a venue where he has previously won?

Rossi has won seven times at Assen across three GP classes, and while a repeat of first place seems a very long way off the Italian is desperate to improve the performance of his machine in the dry. Can he hark back to Catalunya and Round 5, where he had made significant progress on the GP12?

Assen is the only circuit on the current MotoGP calendar which has hosted a Grand Prix every year since the World Championship series started back in 1949. Is it possible that this weekend the Ducati riders make a bit of their own history and score a notable result for the Bologna factory?
