In 1982, Gianluigi “Gigi” Buffon was 5 years old. That year, Gli Azzurri won the World Cup. Buffon watched it happen. Italy’s next world championship title? Buffon made it happen.
At age 35, Buffon has packed more awards, matches, and titles into his career than most. Current captain of the Italian National Team, Buffon has appeared 106 times for his country and proudly hoisted the World Cup trophy in 2006. A solid player and teammate as well as fan favorite, he’s considered one of the best goalkeepers in history. He started his career at Parma at age 17, playing more than 200 matches for the club in 6 years and winning the UEFA Cup, the Italian Cup, and the Italian Super Cup in 1999. In 2001 he signed to Juventus Turin for a world-record goalkeeper's transfer fee and continues to lead La Vecchia Signora.
Just don’t call Buffon Il Vecchio Signore. He celebrates his 35th birthday today, and we have a hunch that a whole lot of good things are yet to come.
