After a run of mixed results, Bordeaux will have to bet their best to defeat the big-spending PSG away…

The season so far has been mixed for Football Club des Girondins de Bordeaux. The six time champions of France currently stand in eighth position in the league after a run of five games that has seen them win two, lose two and draw two. This has been the story of their season, having won 10, drawn 10 and lost eight. So a trip to league leaders, the big spending PSG, might seem a difficult task. But Bordeaux have been at their best against the bigger clubs this season and also have a good record against PSG.

Since the 2000/01 season the clubs have met 29 times in the league and cup, with Bordeaux winning 14 to PSG’s nine. Remarkably, six of Bordeaux’s victories have happened at PSG’s stadium, so they have history on their side for the trip to Paris.

Striker Cheick Diabaté will have a bug part to play. He has often found first team chances hard to come by at Bordeaux and has spent large parts of his career on loan, but he was recently one of the top scorers in the Cup of African Nations. Used either as an impact substitute of from the start, the imposing Malian international has five goals to his name this season, including one in Bordeaux’s last game against Aj Ajaccio.

After spending so much money last summer and hiring Carlo Ancelotti, PSG are a difficult prospect for Bordeaux. Brazilian Nenê has scored 13 goals and is a free-kick specialist, striker Kevin Gameiro has 11 goals and Argentine playmaker Javier Pastore has nine goals and four assists. Bordeaux will need to work hard to soak up the early pressure and silence the crowd and look to hit the strikers early on the counter-attack. The past has shown us that it can be done, can they make history this evening?
