We’ve obviously known all along what amazing potential this team possess but must confess we are relieved. It was, in all honesty, one of the sweetest defeats we’ve ever experienced. Africa needed this. The World Cup needed this.
England and certainly not the USA did not qualify without drama either. England scored fairly early on and looked to control the match, without owning it, making Capello at least a little bit happier afterwards.
“I’m very happy cause today we saw the England I know. We’re now looking forward. We can play any team cause we have an open mind.”
A friendly tip is to keep it as open as you want but shut your goal. Germany awaits on Sunday and we have another classic game to look forward to.
The Desert Foxes managed to keep a clean sheet for over 90-minutes against a quite furiously attacking USA who clearly knew the result in the England-Slovenia game and understood it was victory or go home. On overtime, Landon Donovan stepped forward and a nation’s anxiety turned into exuberant joy with his late-goal. A sad exit for Les Fennecs but they showed they can keep up against good opposition on a high level and will surely come back stronger, fitter, hungrier.
Interesting side note: South Korea-Uruguay will meet winner USA-Ghana in the quarterfinals. One of those teams are actually at least in the semifinals. Wow. We didn’t see that one coming.
