Another massive twist in the championship at the Sachsenring blew the title race wide open, and made it a three-way contest as Dani Pedrosa won, Casey Stoner crashed out and Jorge Lorenzo picked up a valuable second place.

Lorenzo won last year’s Mugello race ahead of eventual champion Stoner who placed third, but can the Spaniard stretch what is now a 20-point lead over his rival with a repeat of his 2011 result at the Tuscan track?

Pedrosa picked up his first victory of the 2012 season in Germany and now sits second in the standings, and another win would strengthen his title credentials.

Andrea Dovizioso has been piling the pressure on factory Yamaha rider Ben Spies with his displays on the satellite M1, and in his home GP will be aiming to keep that up. Could we see a satellite challenging for a win this time out?

It’s that time in the season when contract negotiations start to get firmed up, and with a number of riders still without confirmed plans for 2012 will there be a major announcement at Mugello?

Valentino Rossi has declared his interest in continuing with Ducati, and Cal Crutchlow has stated he is in advanced talks with the Italian manufacturer to take up a factory seat in 2013.
