Uruguay defied the odds on Saturday to clinch a famous penalty shootout victory over a star studded Argentina side.

The Uruguayans started the better of the two sides and took an early lead courtesy of Diego Perez’s smart finish after just six minutes. However, the celebrations were short lived and Argentina were back on level terms just 12 minutes later thanks to Gonzalo Higuain well-taken goal. After some high tempo, end to end action, the match then looked to be turning in Argentina’s favour when Uruguay were reduced to 10 men, with goal-scorer Perez receiving his marching orders on 39 minutes.

Throughout the second half Argentina came close to grabbing a winner, but were thwarted at every opportunity by the outstanding Fernando Muslera in goal, heroic last gasp blocks and some wayward finishing. With just three minutes of normal time remaining, Uruguay were then given hope when the combative opposition captain, Javier Mascherano was sent off, much to the dismay of the home nation.

In extra-time both sides went close to taking the lead, but neither could find the breakthrough desperately needed and the game went to the dreaded penalty shoot-out. With the pressure on, it was Uruguay who rose the occasion and slotted home five penalties and crucially, Carlos Tevez saw his effort saved by the impressive Muslera to send the Uruguay fans wild. Uruguay now take on Peru in the semi-finals as they chase a record-breaking 15th Copa America title. We’re backing them for more success!
