PUMA Motorsport recently caught up with our MotoGP pundit extraordinaire, Alex Hofmann, to put the sport under the spotlight and find out what it really takes to make it at the top.
I must say it’s great to be back at my home circuit, the Sachsenring, which became a MotoGP world championship venue back in 1998.
There is absolutely no getting away from it: In Sunday’s Italian Grand Prix at Mugello, PUMA’s MotoGP partner Ducati suffered yet another tough race, with the team performing well below expectations at a track which both riders know virtually better than any other.
Very wet weather was predicted for the Dutch TT in Assen, and the forecasters were absolutely right: it tipped down all weekend, from Thursday to Saturday. Yes, that’s right: race day was Saturday, as has become traditional for this round, a bit like F1 sticks to Thursday practice sessions for the Monaco Grand Prix in Monaco when all others run Friday-Sunday schedules.

The British Grand Prix at Silverstone was certainly the toughest race Valentino Rossi has had for PUMA’s partner team Ducati, and it could also be the toughest MotoGP race he has ever ridden. The reason for it is a bit of a mystery to me, because Nicky Hayden on the second Ducati had a good race, probably the best he has had this year.
As it turned out, Sunday’s Catalan Grand Prix was not the most exciting MotoGP race in recent times, but the weather kept us guessing until the end.
Although Casey Stoner (Honda) walked away with Sunday’s French Grand Prix at Le Mans, the good news for Ducati fans is that Valentino Rossi scored his first podium of the season with a fine ride to third behind Andrea Dovizioso’s Honda.
