After the tragic Malaysian Grand Prix the mood in the Valencia paddock ahead of the last race of the 2011 MotoGP season was sombre. It was almost as though we were all pleased to see the end of the championship, and not for happy reasons, either. The crowd seemed to sense the mood, and stayed away: it was the lowest turn-out I have ever seen at a race in Spain despite the fact that Dani Petrosa could still finish third in the championship despite missing two races through injury.
With the 2011 MotoGP World Championship having last week been decided in favour of Honda rider Casey Stoner - adding to the title he won with Ducati in 2007 - the series can look forward to the final two rounds with relish, for now the riders can get down to doing what they do best: racing.
Sunday was a mixed day for a lot of us in MotoGP, but it could not have gotten any better for Casey Stoner. Not only did he win his home round in Phillip Island for the fifth time in succession, but he scored his second world championship – at home, in Australia.
MotoGP’s hectic 18-race schedule means this weekend sees the picturesque Phillip Island circuit situated 100 kilometres south-east of Melbourne host the series’ 16th round, with Malaysia’s round in Sepang following a week later ahead of the season finale on the 6th November in Valencia
The background to this Sunday’s Japanese MotoGP round is well documented: following the earthquake/tsunami which hit the home of Honda/Yamaha/Bridgestone in March, this event, originally scheduled for 24th April, was postponed to this weekend.
This weekend sees MotoGP contest its 14th round (of 18) of the season at the new MotorLand Aragon facility situated in central Spain.
