World Cup Heroes: Gonzalo Camacho

Born in Buenos Aires, Gonza has been playing rugby since the tender age of ten, going onto represent the first XV of the prestigious Buenos Aires Cricket & Rugby Club as an amateur until 2009 when he crossed the Atlantic to ply his trade professionally for the English Premiership’s London-based Harlequins. During his time at Quins, playing rugby in the shadow of Twickenham stadium, Camacho made 30 appearances and scored a total of 20 points. It was, however, his final match-winning effort for the Londoners in May that helped Harlequins secure a spectacular victory over Stade Francais in the final of the 2011 Challenge Cup in Cardiff.

His impressive performances for Harlequins and Argentina attracted the attention of numerous Premiership clubs in the off-season and Gonzalo has recently been snapped up by league new boys, Exeter, on a two-year contract. Exeter fans will no doubt be waiting with baited breath for Gonza to return from international duty in New Zealand and further strengthen the squad who are currently placed second in the league behind his former club, Harlequins.

Gonzalo is currently focused on the Pumas World Cup campaign and will be hoping to repeat the heroics of 2007 when Argentina came third in the game’s greatest tournament in France. Argentina, who are currently ranked 9th in the world will take on the team directly above them on Sunday in a must-win game against Scotland in Wellington. The clash will almost certainly determine which of these two nations will qualify for the knockout stages of the competition with England expected to top Pool B.

Here’s hoping Gonza can put in a performance to remember against the Scots and see them safely through to the Quarter Finals in October!
