But that little nip in the air that blushes your little nose is also a chilling reminder that winter is just around the corner. And if the snowpolalypse of 2011 is any indicator of the winter as yet to come, you’re going to need to navigate your wardrobe just as meticulously as you weave between ice puddles.
Here’s a tip from many-a-experienced runners on how to get through your winter workout: Experiment with layers.
Every body has different tolerances for cold, but by layering, you will always have the option of peeling off if you get too hot—and bundle up again if you get chilled.
Look for sweat wicking material for things that will be touching your skin. Even better, invest in a thermo top that will keep you warm without weighing you down. Wear a regular running shirt (long or short sleeve) over that, and top it off with a windbreaker.
If your hands get really cold, numb and painful, try doubling up on gloves as well. If you’re really prone to cold hands, think about mittens—keeping your fingers closer together will trap that precious body heat.
Last but not least, buddy up with a good friend—it’s amazing how little the cold will get under your skin when you are chatting with a good workout friend!
