With free drinks for a year going to the winner of the Candy Store Cup, PUMA sailors are preparing for a show down in Newport, Rhode Island.

The Candy Store in The Clarke Cook House is a Newport hot spot for sailors and particularly the PUMA Ocean Racing crew.

Ken Read and the PUMA Ocean Racing team will sail in the Candy Store Cup today.  The Candy Store Cup is a pursuit style, 40 mile race starting and finishing in historic Newport Harbor with a party to follow at the world-renowned Candy Store.

The line up for today is:

  • Vanquish, Reichel Pugh 65
  • PUMA's Mar Mostro, Volvo Open 70
  • Shockwave, Reichel Pugh 72
  • Rambler 100

The Candy Store Cup was first sailed on the first lay day of the 1977 America's Cup.  Bill Zeigler's GEM took the honors in the inaugural race.  Throughout the year, the race has been sailed by various classes from 12 Meters to Shields.  This race is a sailors' favorite because the winning crew is awarded free drinks for a year!  Kenny has negotiated that if PUMA wins the 2011 Cup, their drinks card will be deferred to 2012.

And from what we hear, the Candy Store makes a mean Dark n' Stormy.
