Tristan da Cunha: Day 1 Blog from Amory

Today we get off the boat. It may seem like a minor step towards our return to Cape Town, but it has taken an incredible effort for us just to get this far. Tristan da Cunha will offer some much needed rest, refuge, and recovery, and we’re all looking forward to being distracted for a few days before the freighter arrives from Cape Town. There is no shortage of work to do, but we got a good start over the last few days and everyone’s in agreement that it would be healthy to take some time away from this thing while we can afford it.

We were in touch with the Tristan residents for much of yesterday and they are really excited for our arrival. We already have some lobster dinners lined up, a round of golf on the world’s most remote course (hazard = cow), fishing trips, volcano hikes…our schedule is full. If we could physically step off the boat onto land, which we can’t (anchor and a water ferry), we’d be stepping onto a regal red carpet.

It is safe to say we’d all rather be headed towards Cape Town – everyone wants to get started on repairs and stepping the new rig – but this is the hand we’ve been dealt and for the time being we’re trying to do our very best to make the most of it. Our week here is going to be an experience nobody will ever forget, and we’re all planning on taking advantage of it as such.

But, can we make the start? Yes.

Will we make the start? Don’t know, not yet.

You can be very sure though that we won’t stop trying.

Enjoy some nice hospitality there guys!!! You definitely need a break and a battery recharge. ENJOY!!! But regarding the points situation, just a thought...did you look at going to Gough Island after a few days? It's just over 210nm further (same course as past few days) and it would get you just over 100nm further East. It looks like there are not good harbors at Gough and you'd have to hang out off the lee side, but it could be a triple bonus in the time game. At 10kts for you guys with improvised jury rig with new parts from Tristan, it would take you one day to get there , but that means it's 100nm further that a) you can get behind you while you're waiting for the freighter, 2) 100nm less miles the freighter has to come East to get you, and 3) 100nm less the freighter has to do to get you all back to Cape Town. All things considered, this extra logistical work may save an entire day (or two?) to get ready for the start of the next leg. Just a thought....but I still think you guys are in the running to win this thing!!!

Hearts are still broken, but watching your return is an inspiration to all. Keep riding the wave. IMHO, Ken and crew are right up there with Sir Peter Blake and CNZ effort after they lost their rig. Keep the hammer down, but take the time to recharge and experience life like not many can. Following from the MidWest.

Keep it going guys. This is an amazing adventure. Here's to hoping you get to Cape Town, get refitted, and off to the next leg safe, sound and well rigged!
