The path to the Design Museum started when we invited African artists from the Creative African Network (CAN) – our platform connecting and promoting artists from and in Africa to design the graphic which would appear on the new shirts of their national team. All of the artists took inspiration from their own country, culture and traditions and created something truly unique. Something much more than just a graphic.
The result is that for the first time in football, the Cameroon, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Algeria, Namibia, Senegal, Togo, Gabon, Burkina Faso and South Africa kits have been designed by a local artist. The new kits fuse the worlds of sport, art and culture by identifying their shared values and communities.
The technical kits have been designed to maximise the player’s on-pitch performance and the jersey fits the body closely to avoid grabbing from the opponent, it also emphasises the physique of the players, allowing them to exhibit their physical presence on the pitch.
Watch out for us in 2012, where the Africa and PUMA story will continue through a common love of the beautiful, artistic and playful game.
You can let us know your thoughts on the new African football kits on Facebook, Tweeting us or by using the #PUMAFootball hashtag on Twitter.
