Before a hectic commute or after a long day’s grind, the last thing you probably want to do is exhaust yourself with a workout or trip to the gym. So how do you find some balance given all your daily demands? We've got some tips.

You want to be fit and healthy, but you also crave a little calm in your day, even if it’s just a few moments. There are lots of small ways to inject some physical activity into your routine and meet your fitness goals. For starters:

Stay on your feet

Whether you get up and pace while you brainstorm about a project, chat at the water cooler or take the stairs instead of the elevator, being vertical is great for the body. Although you may not notice it, standing upright works most of the major muscle groups. Simple as it may seem, finding ways to be on your feet when possible can make a difference.

Focus on the positive

A good belly laugh can engage your core muscles, and strong feelings like love or attraction can raise the heart rate. The subtle increases in physical activity brought on by these “good” emotions over time can produce surprising results. You’ll feel better physically as well as mentally, because your body is actually doing healthy work.

Play, don’t work

One of the biggest barriers to overcome when you’re trying to be fit is the idea that it’s hard. Being fit involves some effort, but you'll be more likely to take the “work” out of a workout if it’s fun. Take your dog for a long walk, play with your kids, do some yoga, try a salsa class, throw or kick a ball around – these activities can be fun and relaxing as well as good workouts. The key is finding activities that you enjoy and want to do, rather than feel like you’re punishing yourself. Find the joy in movement!

Wake up earlier

No surprise – your body burns more calories when you’re awake than asleep. If you get up just one hour earlier, without cutting into the six- to eight-hour range of healthy sleep, that’s an hour more of activity. Whether you’re a morning person or not, the sooner you get into your day, the sooner your body will get into its groove.

These are just a few easy things you can do to stay fit with a busy schedule. How do you find the time to fit fitness into your life? Give us your tips below, or share on Facebook or Twitter!
