Sergio Agüero Shines As Man City Come From Behind To Beat Porto

Once again Sergio Agüero proved the difference last night as Manchester City beat Porto 2-1.

What is it about Sergio Agüero’s sense of occasion? Not for the first time he provided the match winning contribution as Manchester City came from behind to do what no team has done for 12 months, beat Porto at the Estádio do Dragão.

The Portuguese champions have one of the best home records in European football. Unbeaten in the league since 2008, they have not been defeated on their own ground in any competition since February. That was until, with the game in the balance, City called on their not so secret weapon. Right on cue Kun Agüero laced up his blue v1.11 Speed boots and went on to secure a dramatic victory.

When Porto took the lead after 28 minutes it looked unlikely Man City would get anything out of the game. The home team crafted a well-worked opener, Hulk flashing in an indefensible cross for Silvestre Varela to sweep in from six yards. The goal settled Porto and they took a deserved lead into the half-time break leaving Manchester City with plenty to do.

It was Yaya Touré who got the comeback started. On 55 minutes his 40 metre angled pass proved too much for Alvaro Pereira to cope with. Under pressure the Porto defender had no option but to deflect the ball into his own net.

With the scores now level and the tide shifting City pushed on but couldn’t find that cutting edge in the final third. They needed someone who could add that special something. With 77 minutes gone they called on Sergio Agüero.

With just under ten minutes to go Touré’s pressing in midfield won the ball back for City who released him down the channel. The big Ivorian broke into the box and had the presence of mind to roll the ball across the area to his mate Agüero who stroked it in. With that the comeback was complete and Kun was the hero once again. His continued deadliness in front of goal will prove crucial as City battle for domestic and European honours but as last night’s performance shows, little is beyond him.
