Yesterday saw five-time World Player of the Year Marta and her Brazilian team-mates kick off their Women’s World Cup campaign with a 1-0 win against a well organised Australian team, who matched them throughout the game. The match saw 27,258 fans pack into Germany’s Borussia Park, Moenchengladbach. PUMA were well represented with 9 players on show for Brazil in Marta, Andreia, Rosana, Formiga, Ester, Maurine, Erika, Christiana and Fabiana.

Brazil started with all intention to attack playing only 3 at the back with Marta leading the 3 attackers up front. However, it wasn’t quite as straight forward as expected for the Brazilians with Australia matching them equally throughout the first half. Both teams saw opportunities to score in the first 45 minutes, but all efforts came to no avail.

The second half could not have started more perfectly for Brazil. In the 54th minute a high ball led to an Australian defensive mix up with Christiana heading through a to Rosana who took one touch to pass a defender and unleashed a shot past the Australian Keeper. The goal slowed the game down and Australia failed to find the rhythm that had created so many chances in the first half.

With Australia going close a few times towards the end of the game, Brazil hung on to record their first win of the tournament. After the match Rosana stressed the importance of team work “I’d like to dedicate it to my team-mates because it was just as important to get a goal today as not let one in.”

In other Women’s World Cup news, PUMA Football would also like to extend a big well done to 19 year old Emilie Haavi who scored the 84th minute winning goal in Norway’s 1-0 victory against Equatorial Guinea.

With Brazil and Norway meeting in the tournament on July 3rd, do you think Marta & co can begin clicking and play the flamboyant football that is synonymous with Brazil?
